The article presents information on extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) which is a relatively new and promising alternative therapeutic modality. It simply is the extracorporeal treatment of a particular subset of cells with psoralen and ultraviolet A. It is rather unique in that the technique provides marked selectivity in treating the diseased cells only. It was discovered that sunlight is a therapeutic agent in the treatment of rickets, scrofula, rheumatism, paralysis etc. So phototherapy became popular. |
