The study evaluated the effect of two pigment sources (carotenoids and phycocyanin) extracted from Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis, which was applied in concentration gradient by dietary supplementation on the colouration of two chromatic varieties of ornamental koi carp; (Cyprinus carpio var. koi.), Kawari (red/orange) and Showa (black and red/orange). Nine practical diets were prepared with Spirulina biomass and extracted pigments. Three phycocyanin concentrations 100, 200 300 mg kg-1 viz., diet 1 (PT1), diet 2 (PT2), diet 3 (PT3) and three carotenoids concentrations 10, 20, 30 mg kg-1 viz., diet 4 (CT1), diet 5 (CT2), diet 6 (CT3) were prepared as treatments. Three controls diets viz., diet 7; only with feed ingredients (C), diet 8; feed ingredients with raw S. platensis biomass (40 g kg-1) (C+) and diet 9; feed ingredients with residues of pigment extracted S. platensis biomass (40 g kg-1) (C+1) were prepared to compare the treatment diets. The fish colour was evaluated every 15days interval during 90 days feeding trial. The chroma of the red zone in Kawari showed significant differences with CT3 diet at the end of the experiment. However, phycocyanin content diets showed significantly higher growth rate than the diet containing carotenoids. Furthermore, pigmentation was correlated with the dose of dietary supplemented carotenoids and phycocyanin, while carotenoids had a deeper and greater influence in fish pigmentation than phycocyanin.
