Abstrakt: The article reports on the construction of group identity in the Mexican press between 1840-60. In their interpretations of national history, nineteenth-century classical writers such as Lucas Alaman, Jose Maria Luis Mora or Lorenzo de Zavala, minimized both the existence of slavery and the presence of the Afro-descendant population in Mexico.
