Trichotillomania is characterized by ill-defined or sharply demarcated patches of hair loss. In addition to the absent hairs there are broken-off stubbles and hairs regrowing at varying lengths. The surface of the skin is normal or may show excoriations. The scalp is a commonly involved area and in severe cases the entire scalp may be affected or only the margin remains normal in which case it is called tonsure trichotillomania. Trichotilloinania in adults is far less common than in children and is seen predominantly in women. The only age group with this disorder in which the male gender predominates is the preschool age. |
