It is estimated that 5 million people in the United States have psoriasis, with 250,000 new cases appearing each year. In 1984, it was estimated that 523,000 psoriasis patients visited dermatologists. More recent treatments include cyclosporine, sulfasalazine, and etretinate. The choice of treatment is determined by many factors, the most important being the severity and type of psoriasis. The goal of treatment is to clear each episode of psoriasis and prevent a recurrence for as long as possible. Other factors include the patient's skin type and reaction to previous therapies. |
