Treatment of HIV with ante retroviral medications has led to markedly improved outcomes for people living with HIV. However, in New Zealand the rate of newly reported transmissions has been increasing. New Zealand now follows a test and treat philosophy that sees the commencement of ante retroviral medication at the time of testing when high risk of exposure is identified. Patients are directed to emergency departments for testing and commencement of PEP (post exposure prophylaxis). This article discusses HIV in the New Zealand context and new initiatives to reduce HIV transmission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
