Abstrakt: We study institutional pressures as an impetus for firms to reposition their presence in submarkets. Integrating the literatures on strategic repositioning and submarket-driven industry evolution, we predict that firms respond to regulations limiting the potential profitability of a submarket by diverting production to proximate, unregulated submarkets. In a context where strategic exit is costly and repositioning costs low, we expect firms to reposition between submarkets and repositioning to be pronounced for firms with greater motivation and ability to respond. Repositioning firms also adopt strategies to enhance the viability of their preferred submarkets. Evidence from firm responses to price ceiling regulation on essential medicines in India's pharmaceutical industry supports our hypotheses. This research adds to the literature on repositioning in industries featuring distinct submarkets and highlights the challenges associated with regulating such industries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
