Abstrakt: Despite advances in job crafting research over the past decade, the dramatic changes in work context and workforce have given rise to new questions about the nature and effects of job crafting. Two of major changes are the increasing uncertainty and interdependence in the workplace. From an uncertainty perspective, the traditional employment relationship in today's labor market, characterized by a fulltime, permanent appointment within one organization, has shifted towards more flexible forms of employment, such as temporary contracts. Employees need not only to manage their jobs but also successfully navigate their careers. Job crafting has been indicated to benefit employees' current jobs, but little is known about how employees use job crafting as a tool to manage their future jobs and careers. Employees in the changing context are facing high job demands due to the increasing use of technology and uncertainty. To protect their health and well-being, employees sometimes reduce their job demands. This strategy is assumed to be beneficial to employees, but empirical studies have found inconsistent results. The effect of decreasing hindering job demands needs to be reconciled. Besides increased uncertainty and flexibility, the use of teams and task interdependence has increased in the workplace. Much research has been conducted on the antecedents and outcomes of job crafting at the individual level. However, very scant research has investigated how others in the work team respond and act to employees' job crafting behavior. Moreover, research to date on job crafting has predominantly adopted a single-level approach, which limited our understanding of how cross-level effects occur from team-level variables to individual job crafting. This symposium aims to tackle above unsolved research questions in job crafting field and introduces new approaches to investigate job crafting. As such, the symposium will contribute to theory development and practical implications of job crafting research.
