Advances in technology have changed the hiring process for both organizations and job applicants (Stone, Deadrick, Lukaszewski, & Johnson, 2015). One such technology has been the use of social media. For organizations, social media has afforded a new avenue to disseminate information about job openings as well as provided a new source of information to be collected and used in their hiring decisions. For job applicants, this has provided a new way to market themselves to organizations as well as gather information about prospective employers. There is evidence that each is utilizing the information from social media but the consequences remain largely unknown (Roth, Bobko, Van Iddekinge, & Thatcher, 2016). Therefore, the focus of this symposium is: 1) to expand the research on the collection and use of such information by the organization and job applicants and 2) to explore consequences and provide implications associated with the collection and use of information by organization and job applicants.
