Abstrakt: Globally, 2.6 million families are affected by stillbirth each year, the majority of these are in low and middle income countries. A large proportion of these are preventable, the consequence of poor maternal health and inadequate care during pregnancy and around the time of birth. Further research and investment are needed to prevent these deaths. Stillbirth has wide-reaching consequences for affected families that are frequently overlooked and under-appreciated. The trauma of stillbirth has long standing psychological, physical and at times, socio-economic ramifications. Some of these negative effects can be lessened by empathetic attitudes of care providers and tailored interventions. However, insufficient attention, investment and training have been given in most settings to support these families. Effective interventions along the continuum of mother and child care are required to bring stillbirth to the forefront of the global health agenda and reduce its burden. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
