In 2003, eight graves were excavated on the site where an open-air archaeological museum was being built at Modrá near Velehrad (Zlín Region, The Czech Republic). This study is focused on an anthropological analysis of the skeletal remains of these people, who were buried in the Early Middle Ages near the centre of the Great Moravian Empire (and probably had lived here before, too). The skeletons were examined to assess their sex and age at death, the state of bone preservation, and to find probable skeletal variation. Then the metrical evaluation was done and the body height was estimated. Finally, a detailed macroscopic investigation of bones and teeth was carried out to diagnose the state of health and to recognize occupation markers and evidence of physical load. The results obtained were brought into context of data from other early medieval burial grounds. The spectrum of diseases and the degree of physical load detected here didn't differ from other Great Moravian sites significantly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
