Approximately 20% of the U.S. population, which equates to over 50 million people, live in rural areas however only 9% of the nation's physicians practice in rural communities. This means that even fewer people have access to qualified health professionals to seek psychiatric assistance. People living in rural areas are at higher risk of suicide than their urban counterparts. Telehealth is the utilization of communication technologies in the delivery of health-related services as well as information meant to support health education, administrative activities, and patient care, Telehealth can be a life-saving tool to change this trend, and can be an effective tool to help manage other psychiatric disorders including depression, psychosis and substance use disorders, and anxiety disorders.
