After the War, the family returned to the family dairy farm at Coleraine later settling on a soldier settlement farm at Caramut, western Victoria, where John established his strong interest in sheep breeding and nutrition. Retaining his sports links, John's crafty spin bowling landed him with a place in the NSW under 21 cricket team and he played in an interstate carnival for NSW which NSW won. In retirement, John liked nothing better than getting out and discussing sheep and cattle nutrition and breeding and organic farming with local farmers and leading discussion groups and field demonstrations.
