The effects of bicarbonate-induced Fe deficiency were investigated in Anethum graveolens organs (leaves and roots). SPAD index, photosynthetic gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide, major antioxidant enzyme activities (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase), and principal secondary metabolites (polyphenols and flavonoids), and their antioxidant properties (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, b-carotene/linoleic acid and chelating ability) were assessed. Our results showed that Fe deficiency had a lowering effect on the photosynthetic performance. Levels of TBARS and H2O2 concentration were negatively correlated with peroxidase activity and with the concentration of non-enzymatic antioxidants which were significantly enhanced in both treated organs, although to a higher extent in bicarbonate-treated leaves. As a whole, these data suggest that the tolerance of dill seems to be related, at least in part, to its greater ability to modulate the metabolism of secondary metabolites and their antioxidant activity and to enhance the antioxidant potential of peroxidase activity.
