Abstrakt: In this work, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were synthesized by chemical co-precipitation method and their photocatalytic applications were studied. The ZnO NPs were formed with hexagonal wurtzite structure with average crystallite size of 29 nm. They were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, SEM, FT-IR and UV-visible spectroscopy. The Raman scattering studies of the pure ZnO NPs showed the first and second order polar and non-polar Raman modes which are characteristic bands of the wurtzite ZnO. The FT-IR analysis showed characteristic Zn-O vibrational mode at 530 cm-1. The absorption spectra analysis showed that the optical band gap energy (Eg) for the ZnO NPs was 3.1 eV. The enhanced catalytic activity was performed by degrading methylene blue (MB) as a model pollutant dye under Sun light irradiation. The ZnO NPs showed excellent photo degradation efficiency of 99 % against MB and this was achieved within 90 min of solar radiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
