SUBSTITUTED OLIGOTHIOPHENES WITH SHORT FLUORESCENCE DECAYS: AN APPROACH FOR ULTRA FAST OPTICAL SIGNAL PROCESSING.

Abstrakt: Highly stable, soluble oligothiophenes, particularly TBK (terthiophene-5,5''-diyl)bisketones), were prepared and subsequently incorporated into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). These fluorescent compounds fulfil the spectral requirements for excitation with GaN-diods at 405 nm as well as for the applied polymer concerning the emission. A very short fluorescence decay of 0.4 ns improves established approaches by one magnitude. A large Stokes' shift to achieve reduced attenuation within the fiber and a remarkable stability towards both, chemical reactions and photo excitation makes these substances ideal for such optical devices. Therefore, they allow easy technical processing and high operating times. Implementation of these fluorophores in solid PMMA-matrices only slightly affects their optical properties. This enables applications in high throughput optical signal processing exceeding the benchmark of 1 GBit s-1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
