Abstrakt: We present a novel melt-spinning fabrication process for graded-index polymer optical fiber that can completely avoid additional dopants for the formation of the refractive-index profile. In the developed process the melt-spun fiber is rapidly cooled down so that the inner and outer parts of the fiber solidify at different speeds resulting in a density gradient. This density variation leads to a refractive-index profile without any further dopants. We present achieved results for fibers made of PMMA, but also first results for bio polymers such as TPU.
