The article deals with utilization of mica schists as raw materials for early medieval rotary querns at the hillfort Staré Zámky in Brno-Líšeň and their possible provenance. These mica schist rotary querns have been compared with natural sources of mica schists and usually also places of rotary querns production: Altenhof near Gars am Kamp (Lower Austria), Čučice near Oslavany (western Moravia), neighbourhood of Svojanov (western Moravia) and Kamieniec Ząbkowicki (Lower Silesia in Poland). The comparison was based on macroscopic, microscopic and geochemical properties including measurement of magnetic susceptibility or detailed investigation of accessory tourmaline using microprobe. Our results of research indicate the mica schists from Čučice near Oslavany are the most likely provenance source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
