Using dried human mandibles, to which miniaturised strain gauge were attached, the strain in the buccal alveolar plate, under horizontal and vertical loading conditions was measured. Recordings were repeated after simulated infra-bony defects had been created and again after simulated osteoplasty and osteocetomy had been carried out to eliminate the osseous defects. The results indicate that in the dried mandibles, osseous surgery procedures resulted in measurable increases in strain in the bone overlying those teeth involved with the lesion and subsequent osseous surgery. In addition, there was a greater concentration of strain in the region of these teeth when they were loaded after simulated osseous surgery. Although the quantitative effects of "osteoectomy" were greater than those of "osteoplasty", the latter procedure, currently defined as the removal of "non- supporting" bone, did in fact result in sizeable changes in the strain dissipation of the system.
