There is nothing really mysterious about Edward Mandell House except his military title, which another Texan tells the author was thrust upon him by a former Governor of their State who appointed him an aide-de-camp on his staff without so much as asking leave. You might pass him twenty times in the street without noticing him, and the only thing which would attract your attention to him indoors probably would be the atmosphere of quiet in which he is enveloped. He is practically noiseless in his movements. |
