Tradition is key in identity processes, using history to legitimize the past. This work aims to study the traditions of some elite private schools in Madrid belonging to religious congregations during the Franco era. For this analysis we have selected two relevant experiences in educational historiography, namely, the Congregation of the Marianist Fathers and the Brothers of the Christian schools-La Salle. Our purpose is not to reconstruct the history of these congregations or their educational institutions, which has been the object of study by other specialized authors, but to examine the way that two private religious colleges for the education of boys - Nuestra Señora del Pilar and Nuestra Señora del Maravillas-La Salle - made use of rituals, rules and practices that shaped their own traditions in order to build a school identity.
