Grace George and Tallulah Bankhead are appearing at the Playhouse in a brilliant revival of Somerset Maugham's "The Circle." When that comedy was first performed here nearly seventeen years ago, it seemed already a little old-fashioned, largely, because of a certain almost Pineroesque explicitness in the diagramming of the problem, but it has aged hardly at all during the interval since, and it seems to me now almost as good as it seemed then. The dialogue is remarkably crisp and biting, but that is not all, for there are present also certain qualities more difficult to name which lift it above the usual level of comedies in the same smart and sophisticated vein. |
