The article presents a report on "At First Light: Niépce and the Dawn of Photography," a meeting co-organized by the Harry Ransom Center and the Los Angeles-based Getty Conservation Institute. The meeting was held at Austin, Texas in November 2003. The Niépce project is a model of intellectual teamwork, exemplifying the best to be had from interdisciplinary scholarship and collaborative research. The project is related to the achievement of photographer Nicéphore Niépce and the notion of primacy in the history of photography along with the conservation study of the original plate. The project involves an international array of institutions, perspectives and participants. Some of the participants at the meeting are Dusan C. Stulik, Jean-Louis Marignier and Larry J. Schaaf. Some speakers placed the life and work of Niépce in scientific, cultural and historical context. While other group discussed, what exactly he achieved and how that achievement has been misunderstood over time. The conference ended with an open forum session about future studies of Niépce and the origins of the medium of photography. |
