Chronic pain is one of the major growing issues in the USA. As patients with chronic pain increase, the prescription of opioid medications, increases. It is a challenge for the anesthesiologist to control perioperative pain of patients who chronically use opioids, because of interactions between opioids and other medications, tolerance to opioids, their action on different receptors and systemic effects of opioids. As a perioperative physician, we have to understand the optimal treatment of these patients. In this current article, we discuss the perioperative management of opioid-tolerant patients, and patients on opioid addiction treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
