Abstrakt: Introduction: Use of tobacco is the second major cause of death in the world. Each year, tobacco products kill around 5 million people worldwide and this number is increasing. Medical students are generally in the age group 17-25 years. This is the time when lifestyle patterns, both healthy and unhealthy, are formed. Moreover, as future doctors, they are the role models for the community in regard to smoking habits. WHO has included prevalence of tobacco use among as physicians, nurses, etc. among the indicators which should be monitored by each country. Aim and Objectives: To find out the pattern of tobacco consumption among medical students. Material and Method: A total of 150 medical students filled a predesigned, pretested, semi-structured self administered anonymous questionnaire with questions on tobacco consumption and its social correlates. Data was analyzed using MS Excel. Results: Among the respondents, 55.3% were males and 44.7% were females. Tobacco Consumption in the form of smoking was found in 24.7% of the respondents. 37.3% of the males and 09.0% of the females were smokers. Awareness about harmful effects of tobacco consumption was very high (91.2%). Conclusion: Tobacco consumption is a major problem among the medical students and we need to take steps to stop its use so as to prevent them from being exposed to its hazardous effects.
