Abstrakt: Depravity and degradation of man is conspicuous by its presence all around us. It is causing great loss to the values of life highlighted in all ethical and theological books. Veryfew modern novelists have tried to uplift man from this morass of depravity. Life is not merely physical pleasure; life is not merely money. Writers like A. J. Cronin have tried to awaken man from his sleep and thus emphasized an important function of literature which is not merely entertainment, but also instruction. The paper discusses the prescription of do's and don'ts in human life. The novels of A. J. Cronin reflect the conflict of theflesh and the spirit that human beingsface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
