The paper reports on the development of an experimental technique to study the absorption spectra of metal hydrides. NiH molecules are produced in a gas discharge source and their visible spectra are recorded with a single mode diode laser. The construction of the source allows for a homogeneous column of molecules, which is a necessary condition for estimation of absorption cross sections. In this study the source is operated in pulsed mode which offers several advantages: higher peak currents (thus higher densities of the molecules), lower heating of the cathodes and possibility for time-gated detection.
