Abstrakt: The article looks at how enculturated aspects of nationalism, commemoration, and memorialization were challenged in the late twentieth century by transnational movements which challenge the status quo. It begins by providing an overview of the rise of nationalism and commemoration during the long 19th and 20th centuries, focusing especially on Germany and West Germany, with discussions including Argentina and Russia.
