Abstrakt: This article analyzes the impact of sport on the state of health, physical as well as mental, objectively as well as subjectively, and it extends the analysis to the impact and interdependence between sport participation and health culture as it is expressed in health related conduct and attitude. In a narrow sense, this article, using cross-national survey data about health conduct in the U.S. and West Germany, investigates the impact of sport participation on health. Overall, the research results cast considerable doubt on the expected causal impact of sport on health. This may be due in part to people's limited involvement in sport that generally results in an insufficient impact level of sport. It may be due to the differential positive impact for cardiovascular diseases and the negative impact for orthopedic problems, although the great number of other health impairments (including mental health) are not affected. But these results also suggest that selectivity of sampling in medical research on sport needs to be more carefully checked.
