Abstrakt: The article presents the author's insights on carnivals and other masquerade celebrations in various countries which use mythical animals and devils to honor their cultures. Topics discussed include the Kanaval, the Haitian Creole name for carnival in Jacmel, Haiti, the common elements of various festivities such as Three Kings' Day, Corpus Christi, and Day of the Dead, and the role of fashion in carnivals.
