The article critically appraises the book "Stafford Cripps: Prophetic Rebel," by Erik Estorick. Stafford Cripps was born in 1889, a younger son of the future Lord Parmoor and one of the innumerable nephews of the unique Beatrice Webb. At Oxford he took a science degree, and in the first World War he managed a government explosives factory. From scientific industry he turned to the law, and in the shortest time reached a place in the courts among the most eminent of king's counsel. A deeply devout Anglican, he gave himself during the 1920's to the cause of international amity through the churches. |
