The author expresses his views on the neglect by journalists and correspondents of the countryside that is also affected by the war. It is comparatively easy for a trained observer or one with good natural instincts, to estimate the psychological atmosphere of London or that of any of the big English provincial towns or cities in time of war. To do as much for the countryside is far more difficult and the countryside, though almost ignored, is hardly less important. After all, it produces much food, it would bear the brunt of invasion and it is the home now of hundreds of thousands of evacuees from the metropolis and the danger areas. |
