Abstrakt: Selection and implementation of a dysphagia screening tool has become an important component of successful management of individuals with neurologic conditions across the continuum of care. Many facilities are currently utilizing dysphagia screening tools; however, review of current practices reveals that many of these screens are clinician created and are lacking validation and an evidence base to support their utility. This article will review available screening tools with an emphasis on the literature that supports their validity and reliability. In addition, this article will review the impact of dysphagia on health care costs and patient outcomes, The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations guidelines related to screening for dysphagia, available screening tools for the neurologic population, and tips for implementing a screening protocol with a focus on multidisciplinary collaboration.
