Audiological Care and Telehealth in Remote Alaska.

Abstrakt: Communication and hearing are central elements of Alaska Native culture yet Alaska Natives are a population that experiences a high rate of hearing loss. Provision of health care in Alaska is challenged by geographical distance and a low ratio of doctors to residents. Fifty-nine percent of Alaska is medically underserved. The state of Alaska has turned to telehealth solutions to address these challenges and improve accessibility and affordability of health care. This brief article will introduce the statewide telehealth network solution and its role in audiological care. The provision of audiological care in the remote northwest region of Alaska Norton Sound Health is reviewed. Alaska Native culture, as it relates to hearing and communication, is discussed.
