Abstrakt: For many years the musicologists argued against "regarding a whole school or period as leading up to one or two outstanding figures, in whom all the virtues and qualities of their predecessors are presumed to be continued," and against performing only the music of these outstanding figures. They contended that the standard repertory of the concert hail was only "a small fraction of the master works of the past," and argued for performance of the large amount of equally fine music that it didn't include.
