Abstrakt: Along with the dramatic transformation of society, the environment surrounding education has also undergone profound changes. People have increasingly diversified expectations as to the role that universities should play in society. In response to these various demands, a wide range of innovative new trials have been launched, exploiting the dramatic advances in multimedia communications technology. Focusing on education-related applications, this paper investigates the network configuration and qualitative aspects of the type of comprehensive network systems that we anticipate will be deployed on university campuses in the near future. First, we consider the range of diverse potential applications for multimedia communications technologies on college campuses. Then we present the concept of a hierarchical structure for a network system that effectively meets these needs. Next, we describe an all-digital bi-directional communications system that, by combining digital satellite and landline circuits, could effectively support a host of learning applications, such as remote lectures and home learning. The structure of the system is described in detail. Quality-related issues related to use as a system for educational purposes are highlighted from the standpoint of the hierarchical structure and interconnectivity is clarified. Finally, we present an overview of field trials that were conducted as part of a cooperative project between Tokai University and NTT. Some findings and evaluation results are presented that demonstrate the effectiveness of the network system and also highlight issues that must be addressed in the future. © 1998 Scripta Technica Electron Comm Jpn Pt 1, 81(12): 65–79, 1998 [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
