Continuous scanning electron beam treatment was applied to modify the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Ti–6Al–4V titanium alloy parts fabricated by wire-based additive manufacturing technique. Scanning electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction reveal the refined microstructure of the melted surface layer of 3D-printed Ti–6Al–4V parts. It was shown that the formation of 20–30 μm size prior β-grains with fine α- and β-lathes within the melted surface layer drastically increases surface microhardness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
