The article examines opposition to the Louisiana Purchase by Federalist and former U.S. representative Fisher Ames, who based his position upon the example of the fall of ancient Rome described in classic historical literature with which Ames was very familiar. The article also discusses Ames's education at Harvard, the shared ideology of Ames with other Harvard graduates and Federalists such as John Adams, James Otis, Jr., and John Quincy Adams, and his views about democracy as different from a federal republic. |
