The influence and variability of the Amazon plume on the Maranhão Continental Shelf was investigated using the Regional Ocean Modelling System (ROMS). The Amazon plume has been the subject of many studies over the years, mainly for its contribution of nearly 20% of all riverine discharge in the world affecting directly and indirectly processes in the Atlantic Ocean. Many studies using in situ data, satellite and models showed patterns and the influence of the plume on different oceanic processes. The ROMS simulation was done for 10 years period in order to reproduce the Amazon river plume occurrence over the Brazilian Equatorial Margin. The numerical modelling experiment was conducted by adding the flow rate of the five major rivers in North-Northeast BEM. From the simulations, it was observed that the presence of the Amazon river plume on the continental shelf waters of Maranhão occurs mainly in the second half of each year. Low salinities below 30 g/kg, in large areas, were observed for the last few months of each year and minimum areas in the first months. In addition, we observed a annual cycle of low salinity in the Maranhão coastal waters for each year simulated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
