The article presents information on Norwegian artist Edvard Munch and his work. Munch is one of the pioneers of expressionism in modern art. The large retrospective, currently on view at the Museum of Modern Art, contains more than sixty paintings, plus a small but adequate sample of the hundred lithographs, etchings and woodcuts which were originally shown in Boston. Over seven hundred graphic works by Munch are known and only by these has he been represented until now in the United States. As the paintings in the exhibition span the years from 1881 to 1942 and the emphasis is very properly placed on the decade 1892-1901, when Munch's most enduring work was produced. |
