4{(Z)-[4-(Diethylamino)phenyldiazenyl]}phthalonitrile was synthesized by diazotization and azo coupling and used to prepare tetrakis-4-(4-{(Z)-[4-(diethylamino)phenyl]diazenyl})phthalocyanine and its cobalt, nickel, zinc and magnesium complexes by template synthesis.
