Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) of iron oxides are increasingly used in many laboratory and medical applications such as hyperthermia, magnetic resonance imaging or magnetic drug delivery. Popular in medical applications are magnetite (Fe3O4) and maghenite (γ-Fe3O4) nanoparticles. They have gained a great interest because of their low toxicity, biocompatibility, simple separation methodology, and low cost of production. A novel magnetic hydrogel adsorbent based on gellan gum and Fe3O4 (GG/Fe3O4) was synthesized and tested for Mn2+ adsorption from groundwater. The performance of the new synthesized adsorbent was evaluated comparatively by carrying out adsorption experiments on both pure gellan gum (GG), and on the new composite (GG/Fe3O4). The results revealed a much higher adsorption capacity of GG/Fe3O4 composite comparative with the GG used alone. These results were attributed to the superior characteristics of the new composite, which combines the advantage of a functionalized surface of GG with the advantage of a large specific surface area of Fe3O4 nanoparticles.
