The population of Lviv (Ukraine) together with the suburban area is about 1 million inhabitants, which creates significant anthropogenic pressure on the environment. Suburban area, which is characterized by a wealth of natural resources - diverse landscapes, forests, water sources, therapeutic waters, is exposed to "creeping urbanization". At present, the geography of recreational use of natural objects is considerably expanded. The greatest burden of holidaymakers of today falls on the suburban area of the city with a radius of 30- 40 km. Short-term holiday related to weekends and holidays is the most widespread and amounts 60% of the time according to other types of rest. The purpose of the work is to study the potential of recreation development in the Lviv agglomeration. The assessment of the potential is carried out using cartographic analysis, statistical and empirical studies and sociological surveys. The specifics of the distribution of recreational resources of the Lviv region are revealed, determined by the passage of the Main European watershed through the city from the northwest to the southeast. The statistical data indicate the growth of population in the suburban area of Lviv, the disappearance, decline and limitation of the use of a significant number of reservoirs available for recreation within the city. Due to the constant deterioration in the quality of infrastructure and accessibility, the recreational needs of the residents remain unsatisfied. It has been established that reservoirs of cities and towns of the suburban area of Lviv - Ivano-Frankove, Horodok, Pustomyty, Kulykiv, and Staryj Yarychiv deserve special attention for the formation of poly-functional nodes of attraction of recreators. Recreation has the greatest development prospects in view of the invariance of interconnections, the availability of infrastructure, human resources for the servicing of tourists, as well as the potential for the development of complementary functions. Is recommended to develop a water sports profile of recreation based on reservoirs in settlements on the border of the city and suburban areas – in the villages of Zubra, Volya Homuletska, Davydiv, Kamenopol. The results of cartographic analysis, empirical studies, and sociological surveys of residents of Lviv agglomeration indicate a low level of potential development of reservoirs in order to provide recreational needs. It has been established that a holistic and thought-out water-based network will provide access to water bodies regardless of their place of residence and control of recreational flows, as well as to reduce the burden on existing resources. Of particular value are reservoirs near historical or natural objects, which, regardless of their location in relation to the city, fill the program with additional possibilities of cognitive character.
