The article presents several developments to sociology. Professor Merton Oyler, chairman of the Sociology Department, Berea College, Kentucky announces a recreation major for the training of rural recreation workers, with particular reference to the southern Appalachian area. T. Lynn Smith, the Head of the Departments of Sociology and Rural Sociology in Louisiana State University, has resigned in order to become head of the Institute of Brazilian Studies at Vanderbilt University. Professor Lowry Nelson taught the first term of the summer session at Utah State Agricultural College and attended the second session of the Permanent Agricultural Committee of the International Labor Organization at Geneva, Switzerland, during the August 4. The Department of Sociology, University of Mississippi will offer the master's degree in rural sociology with specialization in population and community organization. Fellowships are available through the Dean of the Graduate School. Rural sociologist Macklin E. John has been made head of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology in Pennsylvania State College. |
