Abstrakt: This essay describes and analyses how Israel is presented in ten East German fiction films between 1957 and 1982. Israel does not figure substantially in these films (for example, as a state, a country or a society); rather, these films reflect the officially regulated East German discourse on Israel. After a short overview of four relevant factors that shaped this discourse, five films are discussed in more detail: Jetzt und in der Stunde meines Todes (1963), Lebende Ware (1966), Ich, Axel Cäsar Springer (1968–1970), Die Bilder des Zeugen Schattmann (1972), and Hotel Polan und seine Gäste (1982).
