Abstrakt: ‘The Triangle of Love: Aesthetics and Engagement’ by Michael Hiltbrunner gives an account of his controversial perspective that culminated in the exhibition ‘The Triangle of Love’ (2015) in Zurich: The disembodied ‘pure’ works by the Zurich concrete artists and other abstract movements have long been contrasted with approaches that are figurative and body-focused, and that centre on corporeal needs such as sexuality. In his perspective both approaches should be read backwards: the excessive, sexual image actually provokes reflection while the image based on concepts and geometrical shapes is highly sensual. These contrasts do not conflict with one another, but indeed, they appear to almost necessarily complement each other, and they bear witness to emancipation processes in a partly repressive environment.
