Abstrakt: Research was designed primarily to test the usefulness of conceptual variable analysis in a study of rural migration and to explain migration in terms of sociological theory. Cohesion and deprivation were the concepts selected and an inverse relationship was posited. Counties were treated as social systems. Net rural migration, a form of withdrawal behavior, was used as a negative measure of cohesion. Three measures of deprivation were developed and used. Two of these measures were significantly correlated with net migration and the theoretical formulation was supported to the extent indicated by the analysis. Presentation of results is followed by a critique and consideration of other theoretical and practical possibilities for migration research which can be explored by the use of conceptual variable analysis.
