The impact of Brillouin pump (BP) pre-amplification on the performance of multiwavelength Brillouin–erbium random fiber lasers (BERFLs) is investigated in this work. Three different schemes—without BP pre-amplification, single BP pre-amplification and double BP pre-amplification—are compared in terms of performance optimization. The experimental results suggest that the single BP pre-amplification scheme achieves the best performance. When the BP wavelength is set to 1550 nm, the single BP pre-amplification scheme has eight channels, which is higher than the four channels achieved with the double BP pre-amplification scheme and the two channels achieved with the scheme without BP pre-amplification. In terms of the threshold power, the single BP pre-amplification scheme records the lowest value of 6.8 mW, as opposed to 13 mW and 12.7 mW recorded for the scheme without BP pre-amplification and the double BP pre-amplification scheme, respectively. Taken together, these results indicate that the best overall performance for multiwavelength BERFLs is obtained when the single BP pre-amplification technique is employed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
