The article discusses the fate of the collection of Alutiiq and Aleut masks collected by French explorer Alphonse Louis Pinart. He donated his collection to the city of Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, in 1875. Topics include Ernest Hamy, founder of the Trocadéro Ethnographic Museum, the collection being exhibited at the Château-Musée in Boulogne-sur-Mer in 1990, and a workshop at the museum in 2006 during which nine sculptors from Kodiak, Alaska, were able to handle the masks of their ancestors. |
