Abstrakt: This study explores the relationship between adoption of recommended cocoa practices by growers in Ghana and the correctness of their knowledge of principles underlying the practices, the growers' sources of cocoa husbandry information, and their personal and economic characteristics. Hypotheses developed from methods and adoption literature were tested with a sample consisting of 1,191 cocoa growers. It was concluded that understanding the principles underlying a recommended practice is crucial to adoption. Extension officers, therefore, have to make growers understand the principles underlying innovations they recommend rather than merely asking them to adopt. Thus, access to formal instructional activities could contribute to the improved performance of growers. Agricultural extension for growers is an obvious mechanism for improvement.
